Choosing Adhesives for Fireplace & Stove Installation

Fireplace and stove construction can involve several different types of bond. Construction boards may need to be fixed to masonry, tiles or fire bricks may form part of the structure, and stove doors may require a replacement thermal rope seal. These applications do not necessarily use the same adhesive.

The correct product depends on the materials being joined, the size and condition of the joint, the required working time and the temperature expected at that position in the installation.

Heat Resistant Board Adhesive for Construction Boards

Heat Resistant Board Adhesive is designed for fixing and jointing compatible high-temperature boards, including Fireplace Construction Board, vermiculite board, high-temperature plasterboard and insulation boards.

Vitcas Board Adhesive is ready mixed and can also be used to fix suitable boards to flat brickwork or blockwork. When fixing boards to a surface, the gap should not exceed the limit stated for the product. For larger or uneven gaps, a different adhesive such as HB60 may be more appropriate.

The Board Adhesive has a stated temperature resistance of up to 1350°C. This temperature rating applies specifically to the Board Adhesive and should not be generalised to other fireplace and stove adhesives.

HB10 Rapid-Setting Adhesive for Fast Assembly

HB10 Rapid Setting Adhesive is a hydraulically bonded heat resistant adhesive developed for fireplace, stove, tiled stove and heat accumulation construction. It can be used for joining suitable prefabricated elements and tiles where a relatively short working and setting time is beneficial.

HB10 has a working time of approximately 10 minutes and a stated temperature resistance of up to 750°C. Its rapid-setting characteristics make it suitable for installation work where successive construction stages need to continue without a long delay.

Because the available positioning time is short, components should be prepared and dry-positioned before mixing and applying the adhesive.

HB60 for Longer Working Time & Uneven Surfaces

HB60 Hydraulic Bonded Adhesive is also rated to 750°C but provides a substantially longer working time than HB10. This allows more time for application and positioning during fireplace and stove construction.

HB60 can be used with compatible tiles, fire bricks, high-temperature plasterboards, vermiculite boards and Fireplace Construction Boards. It is also suitable for applications where a thicker adhesive layer is required, including fixing suitable construction boards to less even surfaces.

HB60 can also be applied over reinforcing mesh on compatible construction boards before the application of Heat Resistant Plaster, where this forms part of the specified construction system.

Stove Rope Adhesive for Thermal Rope Seals

Stove Rope Adhesive has a much more specific function. It is designed for securing thermal rope, tape and compatible ceramic fibre seals used in applications such as wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves, range cookers and boilers.

The range includes black and white rope adhesives to suit different installation requirements. Rope adhesive should be used for fixing the appropriate sealing material rather than as a general-purpose adhesive for construction boards, tiles or fire bricks.

Which Fireplace or Stove Adhesive Should I Use?

Compare the requirements of the installation before selecting an adhesive:

  • Construction and insulation boards – use an adhesive specifically designed for the type of board and substrate involved.
  • Flat or uneven surfaces – consider the gap between the board and substrate. Ready-mixed Board Adhesive is intended for relatively close-fitting surfaces, while HB60 can be used where a thicker application is required.
  • Tiles and fire bricks – choose a product specifically suitable for these materials, such as the appropriate hydraulic bonded adhesive.
  • Working time – HB10 is designed for rapid setting, while HB60 provides a longer period for application and positioning.
  • Thermal rope seals – use dedicated Rope Seal Adhesive rather than a construction or board adhesive.
  • Service temperature – check the stated temperature rating of the individual adhesive against the expected exposure at its installation position.
  • Substrate compatibility – confirm that the adhesive is suitable for every material involved in the bond.
  • Curing – allow the selected adhesive to set and cure according to its individual instructions before exposing the installation to operating temperatures.

The adhesive with the highest temperature rating is not automatically the best choice. A product designed for boards, for example, performs a different function from a hydraulic adhesive used for construction or a specialist adhesive used to secure a stove rope seal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What adhesive should I use for fireplace construction board?

Use an adhesive specifically intended for the construction board and substrate involved. Vitcas Heat Resistant Board Adhesive is designed for fixing and jointing compatible boards including Fireplace Construction Board, vermiculite board and high-temperature plasterboard. For fixing boards to uneven surfaces or where a larger gap needs to be accommodated, HB60 may be more appropriate.

What is the difference between HB10 and HB60?

The main difference is working and setting time. HB10 is a rapid-setting hydraulic adhesive with a working time of approximately 10 minutes, making it useful where construction needs to progress quickly. HB60 provides a much longer working period, allowing more time for application and positioning. Both products have a stated temperature resistance of up to 750°C, but their application characteristics differ.

What is the difference between Board Adhesive and HB60?

Board Adhesive is a ready-mixed product designed specifically for fixing and jointing compatible high-temperature boards and for fixing them to suitable flat masonry surfaces. HB60 is a hydraulically setting powder adhesive that can accommodate thicker applications and is also suitable for selected tiles, fire bricks and construction systems. Choose according to the substrate, gap and installation method.

Can fireplace adhesive be used for fire bricks?

Selected fireplace and stove adhesives can be used with fire bricks, but not every adhesive in the category is intended for this purpose. HB60 is suitable for fixing compatible fire bricks, whereas Board Adhesive is primarily formulated for high-temperature construction and insulation boards. Always check the individual product specification before bonding refractory components.

Can Board Adhesive be used to fill large gaps behind fireplace boards?

Vitcas Board Adhesive is intended for relatively close-fitting applications and can be used to fix compatible boards to suitable flat brickwork or blockwork where the gap does not exceed the product's specified limit. For larger gaps or less even surfaces, HB60 may be more appropriate. Assess the substrate before choosing the bonding method.

What adhesive should I use for stove rope?

Use a dedicated heat resistant rope seal adhesive for securing thermal rope, tape or compatible ceramic fibre seals. Vitcas Rope Seal Adhesive is designed specifically for this purpose and is available in black and white. Construction adhesives such as Board Adhesive, HB10 or HB60 should not be substituted for a product intended specifically to secure stove rope.

Can stove rope adhesive be used as a general fireplace construction adhesive?

No. Stove Rope Adhesive is intended specifically for securing suitable thermal rope, tape and sealing materials. It should not be used as a substitute for Board Adhesive or hydraulic bonded adhesives when constructing fireplace surrounds, fixing boards, bonding tiles or installing fire bricks. Select the adhesive according to the material and type of bond required.

Which adhesive is best for a tiled or heat accumulation stove?

The correct choice depends on the construction method and required working time. HB10 is rapid setting and is specifically used in tiled stove and heat accumulation construction, while HB60 provides a longer working period for applications where additional positioning time is useful. Check the materials being bonded and the installation instructions before deciding between them.

Can fireplace and stove adhesives be used directly in a flame?

Direct flame suitability should not be assumed simply because an adhesive is heat resistant. Products within this category have different formulations, temperature limits and intended installation positions. If the adhesive will be exposed directly to flame or located within a combustion area, use only a product whose individual specification confirms that the intended application is suitable.

Do fireplace and stove adhesives need to cure before heating?

Yes, the adhesive should be allowed to set and cure in accordance with its individual instructions before the fireplace or stove is brought to operating temperature. Rapid-setting and longer-working hydraulic adhesives have different working characteristics, while ready-mixed products may have their own drying requirements. Always follow the instructions for the selected adhesive.

Is a higher temperature rating always better when choosing fireplace adhesive?

No. Temperature resistance is only one selection criterion. The adhesive must also be suitable for the substrate, joint or gap, construction method and required working time. A higher-rated Board Adhesive, for example, is not automatically a substitute for HB10, HB60 or Rope Seal Adhesive when one of those products is designed for the specific task.
